Wood ear - Auricularia auricula-judae
« on: February 03, 2011, 09:21:14 PM »

These mushrooms would be marketable to a degree as they're quite heavy fruiters. the draw back is the strange appearence and lack of flavour. The mushroom is generally eaten for it's medicinal properties and texture. They are generally eaten  in chinese stews.

It is unfortunate that we dont have fresh supply of it in Au.
None that I am aware of in VIC, and anything north of here isnt being trucked down anyways. Not enough incentive for the farmer I guess. But I have had the pleasure of having this mushroom fresh as a stir fry, and in a soup, and in my breakfast scrambled eggs in china. I had it first in Zhang Zhou as a stir fry....OMG texture and taste were amazing. Then in Shanghai as a soup, again taste and texture so perfect. Then I fell in love with Woodear in my scrambled eggs in Fu Zhou. The problem is that even though they look like they are fresh here, they are generally imported dried, then rehydrated and sold as fresh. and the worst part is that people sell them as Aussie grown! tsk tsk

Don't ever rub one on a cut...they're an anti-coagulant.
