Warm weather mushrooms varieties
« on: October 15, 2016, 07:00:46 PM »
Hey guys,

Just wondering what are the better mushroom species/varieties to grow during the summer months? I'm located in Melbourne Australia so temps get way up to 45c but average is 14c - 26c. I have king oysters and Shiitake on the way so I'm hoping these will be fine.

King oysters prefer the cold.  Shiitake love the tropic temperatures especially if you can keep the humidity up.  Speaking from Melbourne summer experience.

P. ostreatus have a big temperature range and they tolerate heat too.

Looks like I will have to get some P. ostreatus for oysters during summer. I've also heard pinks are quite heat tolerant as well.

Yeah but they don't taste as nice.  They do excite people though.

Yellows do well too, pretty crap shelf life.

Blues, Greys and Pearls are all superior IMO.

I find the yellows exciting.

I had some of that Fothergills spawn for yellows.

Grew some nice mould with it.

That freeze dried stuff was rubbish.

I hear their new kits are better, not brilliant but OK.

I got this earlier this year. Might have been older stock. Was from the big green shed.

Was it a box of damp stuff?

Or was it dried grains you put onto soaked boards?  (you had to do the soaking then put in a bag)

It was the dried millet spawn in a packet that you had to put on straw or their fibre boards.

I was wondering why they just don't sell wet stuff.
